Torres Strait lies at a crucial point both geographically and conceptually between Australia and the Pacific. This book examines methodologies used in both regions for examining bounded archaeological communities. It applies a model of social archaeologyand regionalisation to identify the settlement history of Mabuyag. By investigating sites of importance to the community this study provides an archaeology that is alive and important to the Goemulgaw people today. The author examines the archaeology of one Torres Strait Islander community, the Goemulgal of Mabuyag in central western Torres Strait. The book provides the first detailed archaeological study into the emergence and development of historically and ethnographically-known villages in the Torres Strait. The close examination of settlement and subsistence histories on Mabuyag furnishes chronological insights into the changing role of villages for a single island community. By examining chronologies previously established by archaeological researchers working in Torres Strait, this study adds to emerging broad chronological patterns across the region.

This monograph examines Swahili plant subsistence and food production patterns through the analysis of macrobotanical remains from four archaeological sites on Pemba Island, Tanzania, dating to A.D. 700-1600. Specifically towns and villages are compared before and during the emergence of stonetowns, settlements characterized by stone/coral household and ritual architecture, which have been described as urban, based on their roles as economic, political, and religious centers along the eastern African coast. Swahili stonetowns are hypothesized to have exerted political control over the immediate hinterland for the purposes of obtaining trade items and staple goods, including plant products. Based on ethnohistoric reports, a wide variety of collected and cultivated plants have been previously proposed as being central to Swahili consumption and production economies including trees in mangrove habitats, coconut, sorghum, pearl millet, and Asian rice. Moreover, it has often been assumed that stonetowns obtained plant products, including staple grains, from the countryside and were not themselves primary food producers. These assumptions are tested directly against the archaeological record in this first comprehensive study of ancient Swahili plant foods.

Tell el-Ghaba project was born as part of an international project launched in the early 1990s by the Egyptian government and UNESCO to save the monuments of North Sinai threatened by the imminent construction of the El-Salam Canal and its distributaries. This is the third volume of the work undertaken by the Argentine Archaeological Mission (AAM) at Tell el-Ghaba in North Sinai. This volume of Tell el-Ghaba consolidates and extends the results of the excavations undertaken in the first stage between 1995 and 1999 and includes the results of the fieldwork conducted in the second stage in 2010. The overall objective of this project is to study the history, archaeology and environment of Tell el-Ghaba. Our research has been directed at developing a deep knowledge of the site: its environment, occupancy levels, architecture, economy, urban planning and social structure, and towards understanding the role of Tell el-Ghaba at a regional level, taking into account its particular location in the north-eastern boundary of the Delta and its proximity to the route that once connected Egypt with the south of Palestine. The volume is divided into an introduction and four main sections: The environmental and physical studies; the fieldwork; pottery; other finds.

Wallingford: The Castle and the Town in Context Wallingford: The Castle and the Town in Context PDF By author K. S. B. Keats-Rohan last download was at 2018-01-27 00:04:21. Medieval castles are, as Professor Liddiard states in his Foreword to this volume, 'evocative monuments and perhaps more than any other building capture the ideals of the Middle Ages.' This idealization and romanticism of castles, however, can often obscure their histories as functioning dwellings, fortresses, and political and social centres. Wallingford Castle in Oxfordshire is a prime example of a structure with a rich history. Its importance lies in its strategic position on the Thames, allowing it to serve as a vital stronghold during conflicts and a royal residence in more peaceful times. This volume is a product of the Wallingford Burh to Borough Research Project (2008-2010), a collaborative project between the Universities of Leicester, Exeter and Oxford. It contains reports of excavations undertaken at the castle and its town, excavated between the 1960s and today. The results of the archaeological investigations are contextualized using contemporary documents and accounts of the castle, such as surveys and rent agreements. Combining the text and material evidence, the contributions to this volume provide a detailed narrative of the history of the site from its construction to its destruction, as well as helpful contextual sections on English history and medieval castles. Also included are sections on excavations at the castle at the nearby town of Oxford and the priory at Wallingford. The text is accompanied by colour photographs, drawings, plans, maps, and transcripts of the Medieval and Tudor documents. This volume accompanies 'The Origins of the Borough of Wallingford: Archaeological and historical perspectives', edited by K. S. B. Keats-Rohan and D. R. Roffe in 2009, (BAR 494), and 'Transforming Townscapes: From burh to borough: the archaeology of Wallingford, AD 800-1400' edited by N. Christie and O. H. From 1956 to 1970 excavations at Tikal, one of the most famous classical Maya sites, was carried out by the University of Pennsylvania Museum Tikal Project. Until now, much of the field research from these excavations has remained unpublished. This volume draws on the original work and data collected by Dennis E. Puleston. Puleston's investigations at Tikal remain unparalleled and this edited and revised collection of his work presents the most extensive mapping work conducted outside of a Lowland Maya ceremonial centre. Work conducted at Tikal provides us with invaluable evidence for many aspects of Maya civilization including agriculture, water systems, earth-work systems and settlement hierarchies. This volume is the only full report of the Tikal survey and crucial for the understanding of Maya civilization. It also summarises related sub-projects, including excavations from satellite sites to Tikal and includes many photographs, maps and illustrations. By making this data accessible for the first time, the volume aims to answer old questions and stimulate new debates.

The history of European settlement of South Americas has been the subject of much historical, archaeological and anthropological research. Guianas in the Amazon region, however life and society in the pre-Columbian period remain comparatively neglected topics. Though the Guianas were inhabited by different local groups before and after European colonisation began in the late sixteenth century, little is known about Pre-Columbian life and society in this region. The eleven papers in this volume seek to fill this gap in research, each focussing on a range of different archaeological and historical methods, such as archaeobotanical analysis, cartography and ethnology. This volume provides a highly original, multifaceted and truly interdisciplinary account of the pre-Columbian Guianas. It also benefits from a greater focus on scientific analysis than the few other studies of the region in this period. The papers included here will be of interest to anyone seeking to learn more about in the pre-Columbian Amazon region, and South America more generally. An English language abstract is included for each of the papers in this volume.

The Middle Euphrates Region, encompassing ancient Syria, enjoyed a period of rapid and complex socio-political development during the third millennium BC. These developments are archaeologically reflected in changes to burials and funerary rituals during this time. This important category of evidence lay largely unexcavated until large-scale dam construction prompted a series of rescue excavations across the region during the latter half of the twentieth century. This in-depth study of the mortuary remains from several sites on the Middle Euphrates presents the material from these and earlier excavations in a single, comprehensive volume for the first time. It uses this material to investigate the multifaceted world of third millennium funerary ritual and cult. The author provides original and informative conclusions about funerary rituals and their possible significance to society in ancient Syria, making this book an invaluable resource for researching the Early Bronze Age activity in the Middle Euphrates Region.

Salt has played a significant role in many ancient and modern processes, such as trade, preservation, health and cooking, which in turn makes the production, trade, transport and use of salt visible both in archaeological and historical evidence. This volume presents the papers of the Second Archeoinvest Symposium, From the ethnoarchaeology to the anthropology of salt (2012), held at the University of Iași, Romania. Many of the papers focus on theanthropology of salt in Romania, home of some of the oldest salt mines in the world and to an ancient and ongoing tradition of salt extraction and use. Also included are papers on evidence for salt use in other geographical regions including Mesopotamia, the Classical World and South America. Further, a selection of papers discuss the use of salt topically, such as the role of salt in magic and medicine, for example. The papers encompass a large chronological span from the Neolithic to the twentieth century. Papers draw on a range of disciplines including archaeology, ethnography, anthropology, medicine, geography, geology. This volume presents a fascinating and unique range of approaches for studying a ubiquitous and vitally important resource in past and present societies.

The study of ceramics, their movement and their changes over time is one of the most significant and fruitful areas of historical archaeology. Nonetheless, a gap in the research is evident from the limited number of projects embracing archaeometrical methodologies. This volume, consisting of several of the papers given at GlobalPottery - 1st International Congress on Historical Archaeology and Archaeometry for Societies in Contact (2012) and further invited contributions, provides a wealth of research and data to help fill this gap. The conference focussed on ceramics of the Early Modern Period, taking a truly global perspective, with sessions on Europe, the Americas, and the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Each paper provides detailed scientific analyses of ceramic evidence, contextualised into historical and social narratives. These papers shed light on the effect societies have on one another when they come into contact, a particularly stimulating topic for a period which saw the European colonisation of the Americas and the first circumnavigations of the world. Throughout the volume, scientific and stylistic analyses are combined to aid our understanding of the transmission of ideas and methods of ceramic technology in this period of increasing connectivity across vast distances. English and Spanish language papers include detailed illustrations and maps along with tabular data and graphs. Owing to its highly interdisciplinary nature, this volume is of interest to those studying a wide range of topics including archaeometry, ceramics, Early Modern archaeology and geographical connectivity.

Early Polynesian social development, and its dispersal through migration, are hotly debated topics, though this development is thought to have been centred on Tonga. This thesis uses material from Tongan archaeological sites to attempt to form more definite conclusions about ancestral Polynesian society, and to attempt to trace its development. It also provides a ceramic chronology for Tonga, which was previously lacking. Using Tongan evidence, along with comparative material from elsewhere in western Polynesia, it provides new insights into this ongoing debate. It is therefore an important contribution to the study of early Polynesian society.

Neolithic cultural groups are traditionally determined on the basis of pottery distribution, and ceramic clusters have therefore been conflated with cultural ones. Though there has been general acknowledgement of the methodological and theoretical problems with this practice, it is still common. This volume aims to find a solution to this problem, by investigating this topic using burial customs. It includes data from nearly five hundred burials at fifty sites around the Mediterranean, thus providing wide-ranging but detailed evidence. The funerary evidence is presented in a thorough catalogue along with several maps and illustrations. The author, using spatial analysis, then combines his findings with the more traditional conclusions taken from ceramic evidence to provide a more nuanced set of conclusions. It thus provides a dynamic and detailed account of the complexities of Neolithic society in southern Europe.

Archaeobotanical data is used as the basis for the investigations of the subsistence economy at the Early Bronze Age settlement KÜllÜoba in west-central Anatolia. This work introduces new evidence from this EBA settlement located on a flat mound in the upper Sakarya Valley. For the investigation of crops and animal husbandry, evidence of the weed taxa and their ecological meaning in the archaeobotanical records are considered as the main sources of information in order to understand husbandry practices such as cropping sequences, intensity of the crop cultivation, harvesting methods and long or short-term cultivation of the fields. Examining the archaeobotanical and zooarchaeological evidence together, the author argues that small-scale intensive crop and animal husbandry was the subsistence strategy for the inhabitants of EBA KÜllÜoba. Strong evidence is also found to suggest that Early Bronze Age KÜllÜoba functioned as an egalitarian farming community organized around extended families.

In 1992, in the context of the Archaeological Project Teotihuacan 92-94 under the direction of Eduardo Matos Montezuma, two caves in the southeast of the Pyramid of the Sun were excavated. The undertaken research demonstrated the use of these caves by teotihuacanos in a ceremonial context but also by the cultures after the collapse of this great metropolis. This book provides a new interpretation of the research done in the nineties using a wider understanding of the use and function of this underground ceremonial complex. Chronological periods have been updated, and the social models are more adapted to the current interpretations of teotihuacan society and the meaning an function of their rulers from classic to postclassic periods. Also this book is a contribution to the study and understanding of the symbolism of caves in the Mesoamerica cultural area.

The papers included in this volume were presented at the 2011 international academic conference 'Continuity and Destruction in Alexander's East: the transformation of monumental space from the Hellenistic period to Late Antiquity', which took place at the University of Oxford. The conference and publication theme - the region commonly known as the Hellenistic East - follows the long-term research interests of the editors and brings together scholars and specialists doing work in the region. It follows in the footsteps of a previous conference of 2009, From Pella to Gandhara: Hybridisation and Identity in the Art and Architecture of the Hellenistic East, which resulted in an edited volume of 2011 published by Archaeopress. While 'Pella to Gandhara' looked into the Hellenistic East as a whole, 'Continuity and Destruction' narrows the focus onto the Near East, with its greater wealth of archaeological research and publication. At the same time, the focus of the current topic carries over ontoan extended time frame spanning the aftermath of the Macedonian campaign, thus tracing steady, smooth or abrupt changes of defining spaces in ancient societies as these were moulded and shaped by the events of the day.

The main aim of this study was to analyse the Roman settlement patterns of the western part of the Conventus Bracarensis, located within a vast province of the Iberian Peninsula: the Hispania Citerior or Tarraconensis. In order to fully understand the Roman settlement patterns of the area under study, it was necessary to verify the political and administrative procedures carried out at the Tarraconensis province together with their direct impact upon the landscape, alongside the varied occupation techniques implemented after the conquest, assessing the different patterns impacting upon the indigenous space. The nature of the available data was analysed through G.I.S. and four operative concepts: entities, relationships between entities, scales and limits to those relationships. Using these elements, the interpretation and description of the studied centres aimed to shed some light on the basic evolutionary features of settlement patterns. Through their complex interactions, the analysed areas provided the minimum conditions with which to achieve the proposed objectives.

Collet Est was a Roman pottery workshop located on the Catalonian coast near Calonge. In active use from the 1st century BC to the middle of the 1st century AD, the workshop was used to produce dolia, local amphora, domestic pottery and building materials. In a later phase the site was reused as a necropolis by the inhabitants of the nearby Roman villa of Collet. This necropolis survived until the 5th century, when the Roman villa was abandoned. The excavation of the site in 2002-2003 revealed 19 Roman furnaces, several rooms and open air spaces where the inhabitants lived and worked, and a kitchen full of a fascinating range of well-preserved artifacts. The excavation also uncovered 30 inhumations with associated grave goods. This book presents an in-depth report of the important rescue excavations carried out by the University of Girona's Institute of Cultural Heritage at Collet Est in 2002.

With a strong emphasis on data, the two volumes of this book demonstrate that mobility was essential to the European Bronze Age by exploring the shared cultural expression of Bronze Age societies in contrast to their simultaneous development of new local and regional characteristics. During this seminal Époque, cultural and social formations of an entirely new kind and magnitude came to characterize Europe. The intense and dynamic relations between local and large-scale change processes coincided with increased mobility in different domains and forms, forging new identities and shaping the emergence of Europe as a distinct cultural zone. Through over fifty essays by leading Bronze Age scholars, the reader engages with cultural mobility and connectivity and the ways in which these forces affected and transformed human behaviour. The two volume set includes four parts; this volume contains parts 1 (Materiality and Construction of Identities) and 2 (Economic and Political Foundations of Interaction and Mobility).

Download now for free or you can read online Hadrianopolis III : Ceramic Finds from Southwestern Paphlagonia book. Pottery finds collected from Hadrianopolis in southwestern Paphlagonia (north-central Turkey), i.e. the region around Eskipazar in the Turkish province of KarabÜk are presented in detail in this volume. Between 2005 and 2008 an archaeological team from the Dokuz EylÜl University in Izmir carried out archaeological field surveys, excavations and restorations in Hadrianopolis and its close surroundings. During these four field campaigns, 1550 sherds ranging between the Pre-Iron Age (2nd millennium BC) and the Middle Byzantine period (late 11th-early 12th century AD) were collected, most of which consist of Late Roman-Early Byzantine (late 5th-mid 8th century AD) coarse ware. Thirty main pottery groups were derived, based on their chronology, function and fabric. A detailed description is given of each find deposit, the typologies and fabrics of wares, and a comprehensive catalogue is included with drawings and photos of each sherd. This book is the first extensive pottery report of the Turkish Black Sea area offering a continual picture of all the wares and chronologies available. From the Foreword by Roger J. Matthews, University of Reading 23rd September 2015: It gives me great professional and personal pleasure to write a foreword to Hadrianopolis III, in which the ceramic materials from the Paphlagonian site of Hadrianopolis and its region are published in exemplary manner by ErgÜn Lafli and GÜlseren Kan Sahin. The volume contains the fullest possible description and discussion of a wealth of ceramic material from the 2005-2008 field seasons in and around Hadrianopolis. I believe this volume can stand as a model of how to publish archaeological material in a manner of most benefit to colleagues with a wide range of professional interests... Through publication of this volume, the authors demonstrate the unique value in cherishing, recovering, analysing and, above all, fully publishing the material evidence recovered in systematic archaeological investigation. Present and future scholars owe them a considerable debt as well as sincere congratulations.

The image of Cleopatra VII Philopator, often a cause of controversy and debate, has long been of particular interest among collectors of classical antiquities and academics. Starting from the controversial identification of the Capitoline Cleopatra and critical reading of the iconographic and literary documentation available, the author discusses iconographic and methodological issues and offers new interpretations and identifications of royal female statuary in Egyptian style. This volume offers a wide panorama of the Lagid figurative culture (Egyptian and Greek) and includes a catalogue of the monuments. The author's Egyptological and semiotic analysis of the sardonyx agate phiale, better known as the "Farnese Cup," reveals what may be considered the most evident and effective result of the concept of 'bilingual' expression through iconography. The historical, cultural, political and religious aspects of the Ptolemaic dynasty are discussed, and special attention is given to the religious politics of the Lagid sovereigns in Egyptian territory and particularly to the deification of the Ptolemaic queens.

The nature of disputes related to the in situ conservation of archaeological remains into the basements of contemporary buildings are explored in this study. Through a novel, interdisciplinary approach negotiation theories and models with heritage management practices are merged, and the concept of in situ museums (structures that conserve in situ archaeological remains) is introduced. The author discusses examples of in situ conservation of archaeological remains in contemporary private and public buildings including museums. Special emphasis is given on the Acropolis Museum which is linked with a wide range of conflicts at local, national and international level. The book concludes with a proposed strategy for managing disputes in the heritage sector.

Throughout the course of history, from early prehistory to the Space Age, power structures have existed which have been more or less derived from or correlated to astronomical phenomena or certain cosmologies and cosmovisions. These have significantly affected and formed the economic, social, political, artistic and religious life of people across different cultures. Cosmographies, time reckoning and calendar systems, celestial navigation techniques, landscape and architectural models of cosmicpotency, celestial divination and astrological ideas, cosmic clothing and other related concepts have been used successfully by interest groups to establish, maintain and expand psychological, social, religious and political power. Furthermore, the celestial sphere and its inhabitants have also been closely connected and partially interwoven with the concept of the manifestation of cosmic order and power both in nature and in culture. The book's 43 chapters cover numerous aspects of the topic, from general ideas to astronomy and politics in the Modern Age.

The results of the excavation of two Paleolithic sites on the Nile in the Republic of the Sudan, undertaken from the autumn of 1965 into the spring of 1966, are presented in this report. Artifacts from Khor Abu Anga and Magendohli, currently housed in the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, are described and quantified. The artifact assemblages are identified as discrete units, placed in chronological order, compared in terms of cultural content, and assigned to known industrial complexes. The Khor Abu Anga and Magendohli assemblages are comparable to and part of recognized prehistoric industrial Acheulian, the Sangoan, the Lupemban, and Aterian complexes well documented in Africa and in parts of Europe and western Asia. The archaeological deposits at Khor Abu Anga are part of a record of evolving lithic technology from late Acheulian through Sangoan into Lupemban in the upper Nile valley over a long period of time.

This book is an historical document presenting the author's doctoral thesis on health and disease in the Pacific Islands, completed in 2001. The study was conducted using a sample from the Solomon Islands in Melanesia and another sample from two burial mounds in Tonga, Polynesia. The primary aim of the study was to assess whether the presence of malaria in Melanesia adversely affected the overall health of these people compared to the Polynesian group, where malaria has always been absent. The Pacific islands are often forgotten when considering global issues of health and subsistence change. However, this region has much to offer with regard to understanding human adaptation to different environments during and after colonisation and the biosocial responses to disease. One of the main drivers for publishing this volume after all this time is an attempt to give this region more of a voice in global discussions of health and disease in prehistory.

This book, based on the author's doctoral thesis, is focused on understanding social and economic aspects of the medieval rural world on the basis of the zooarchaeological analysis of seven different assemblages of animal remains located in the north and centre of the Iberian Peninsula. Multiple lines of analysis are utilized and combined in order to understand animal husbandry practices, subsistence strategies, the use of animal bones and antler as raw material, and site formation processes. The main contributions of this work are understanding the economic system of medieval peasant communities and changes over time, as well as understanding the ways of social differentiation through diet in medieval Iberia. Also, worked bone and antler and butchery practices are analysed. Other aspects related to the social dimension of the use of animals are discussed, such as the presence of companion animals, the introduction of species, and the veterinary knowledge of the peasant communities. The use of animals in possible ritual or symbolic contexts is also analysed. This book is a substantial contribution towards understanding animal use in the medieval Iberian Peninsula.

A fresh and innovative approach to the skeletal biology of prehistoric South Asians is presented in this volume. It is the first comprehensive bioarchaeological study of an early Holocene human skeletal series from the Gangetic Plain of North India. New methods and techniques reveal insightful perspectives on the biological adaptations and affinities of the aceramic foragers from Mesolithic Damdama (ca. 8800 BP). Attention is given to archaeological context and to the geological and ecological setting in which these semi-nomadic, microlithic hunters lived and foraged. The integrative analysis of skeletal preservation includes documenting bone micro-structure and chemical composition, and a taphonomic approach to skeletal representation. Diverse methods of age and sex determination provide a firm basis for paleo-demographic analysis. Multivariate statistics refine the precision of: sex determination, stature estimation, and calculation of bio-distance from cranial and dental attributes. The large skeletal sample facilitates both statistical assessment of traits by sex within the Damdama series, and inter-site comparison of traits with nearby Mesolithic series and with key prehistoric samples from India and Pakistan. Prevalence of pathological lesions provides evidence of health and nutrition, while skeletal markers of activity yield insight into patterns of habitual behavior. These new data from Mesolithic Damdama contribute significantly to theoretical issues in anthropology, including health and subsistence, skeletal robusticity, and biological adaptation to a subtropical riparian environment.
