Around 9500 BC, a number of changes take place in the life ways of human groups that, henceforth, will be designated as Mesolithic. These changes set them apart, behaviourally, from the preceding periods. Even though the ancestral know-how was passed across the Pleistocene/Holocene boundary, new solutions were implemented. Groups became more mobile and more dependent on the exploitation of marine resources. Shell middens crop up not just all along the Atlantic faÇade but also in more interiorly located sites. Technical choice and mode of resource extraction are situationally adapted and/or created. This behavioural flexibility is specific to the early Mesolithic and contrasts with the rigidity of Magdalenian peoples' technical systems. The History of the earliest Mesolithic communities in Portugal is mainly based on the study of three key-early Mesolithic sites, Toledo, Areeiro III and Barca do Xerez de Baixo, with a main focus on their lithic industries (recreating all the productionprocess), although other archaeological components are also presented and discussed. Despite being contemporary on a radiocarbon scale (they all accumulated during the Boreal chronozone), each of these sites represents a distinct way of using space and the available local resources.

During the excavation of Hospital Viejo Street, up to three overlapping pottery workshops operating in the XIII, XIV and XV centuries were identified, with discrete spatial distributions and various production structures. These workshops were probably governed by Islamic potters, who abandoned them after the expulsion of the Moorish communityin 1502. We identified fifteen groups of earthenware, tin-glazed ware, glazed ware and luster-glazed ware, based on the ceramic pastes and processing methods used. From secondary criteria, we identified thirty-five basic forms, and multiple variants, of cooking, drinking, eating and storage vessels, along with auxiliary elements. The stratigraphic sequence of the site provides very tight timelines for the start and end of production.

This volume presents the proceedings of the II Jornadas Predoctorales en Estudios de la AntigÜedad y de la Edad Media, held at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, on the 19, 20 and 21st November 2014. The book follows the principal subdivision of the conference sessions: Ancient East; Greece, from Archaic to Hellenistic Times; Republican, Imperial and Late Antique Rome; Early Medieval Literature; Late Middle Ages and Humanism. The papers focus on the use of the texts in different sciences of Antiquity and Middle Ages (History, Archaeology, Philology, etc.) and how that use is a common tool to study the past, considering the literary source as the main nexus among disciplines. Quoting Thucydides, a text is a Κτῆμα ἐς αἰεὶ (an eternal possession), so, even though the papers in this volume deal with different chronologies and subjects, the approach of the study is always based on texts.

This monograph focuses on Greek architectural terracottas coming from recent excavations at the urban sanctuary of Kaulonia, a polis on the eastern coast of Calabria. The work outlines the phenomenon of architectural terracottas in their diachronic development, clarifying the manner in which their production first arose, reconstructing the range of distribution of the products of Kaulonia (among the most important in Magna Graecia), and highlighting their links with other materials of the same class in Greece and Southern Italy. It also examines significant aspects of production and attempts to investigate the ideological elements implicit in 'horn' roofs (a peculiar group of Southern Italy terracottas). The monograph further presents results that are of interest to wider architectural studies and Greek archaeology, including a reappraisal of 'horn' roofs class and a new identification of roofs found at Olympia.

Reports of the open area excavation at the York Minster Library conducted in 1997 and associated research are presented in this book. The excavation was complemented by geophysical survey and detailed documentary research in advance of an extension to the Minster Library, a converted medieval archbishop's chapel. The research unearthed archaeological strata up to two metres deep which have been attributed to eight distinct periods of activity. The periods of activity include evidence for Roman legionary barracks, an 11th-century boundary ditch, a 13th-century solar block of the archbishop's palace, 17th-century pleasure gardens, and, finally, the conversion of the archbishop's chapel into the Minster Library.

The Archaeology of Gatherings was a thematic international conference to bring together a range of speakers from different disciplines. It took place at the Institute of Technology, Sligo, Ireland, between 25 and 27 October 2013 during the year of 'The Gathering', an Irish government initiative to engage with the worldwide diaspora. The aim of the conference and of this volume was to take a multidisciplinary approach in order to explore the structures, material culture and psychology behind gatherings of people. This volume thus seeks to contribute to the study of varied types of temporary gatherings both from the contemporary world and from the past. Through time people have gathered together for many reasons, including religious and political assemblies, social interaction and to exchange commodities and ideas. While some of these gatherings occurred in particular buildings or arenas, many were outdoors and temporary, and may have left only limited material evidence of their occurrence. It is therefore hoped that this multidisciplinary approach will provide insight into these sometimes ephemeral events and their remains.

Download now for free or you can read online DE L'OREILLE A l'ECOUTE : Etude des documents votifs de l'ecoute: nouvel eclairage sur le developpement de la piete personnelle en Egypte ancienne book. This book deals with a category of documents attesting to piety from individuals in ancient Egypt which develops the topic of a god who listens to prayer. The reference corpus is made up of stelae, with depictions of one or more human ears-sometimes accompanied by the depiction of an offering-and votive ears, along with prayers on various objects where the invoked deity is referred to as the god who listens to prayer. These testimonies occur only during the New Kingdom (1539-1080 BC); after this period there is almost no further mention of a god who listens to prayer, though personal piety continues to increase until the Late Period. If the corpus of ear stelae is extended to include all items that mention the god who listens, a surprising chronological partition emerges which enables a link to be established between the abandonment of ear stelae and the development of oracular consultations by individuals. It therefore appears that the "hearing documents" are a key driver of change in the New Kingdom official religion, rather than being a mere consequence of it. The book contains a preface, a foreword, the main text, a bibliography, appendices, plates and indices. The documentation corpus is listed in the appendices.

Ancient rivers have altered many Palaeolithic sites, obfuscating our ability to understand early human behavior. Building on previous models characterizing fluvial disturbance, the research presented in this volume focuses on identifying new ways ofunderstanding how lithic assemblages are affected by rivers through a series of experiments. It is argued that these effects are predictable, but dependent on aspects of river and artifact morphology. It is suggested that this new knowledge improvesour understanding of the earliest human occupations of Northern Europe.

The permanent system of coastal batteries of the Strait of Messina was erected in the late nineteenth century according to newly discovered plans of the defences of the Kingdom of Italy. Already conceptually obsolete during construction and progressively decommissioned, it was barely used for over half a century, and at the outbreak of World War II was replaced by a new defensive system. Today, it represents a significant and valuable example of Italian military architecture that has not yet been sufficiently analysed and documented.

The strategies of production and consumption of lithic artifacts implemented by the hunter-gatherer societies who participated in the first peopling (final Pleistocene - 13,000/10,000 BP - and early Holocene - 10,000/7500 BP) of the southern end of the American continent are investigated in this book. The analyzed materials were recovered from rock shelters in the Central Plateau of Santa Cruz, Patagonia Argentina. The lithic materials are approached from a dynamic concept of technology. This research extends the knowledge of the dynamics of tool production and resource exploitation, rather than just analyzing the procurement and manufacturing practices. The differences in and continuities of the technological preferences of the early hunter-gatherer societies are recorded, especially regarding the use and design of edges. This study presents a model of how to analyze the variability in use of artifacts from a perspective which goes beyond the idea of tools having a univocal nature.

A complete analysis of matt-painted pottery from Segesta, Sicily is presented in this volume. The analysis is based on direct examination of thousands of pottery fragments excavated from different contexts, both public and domestic, and from which the author derives a detailed typological and chronological order. The core of this study is the analysis of the functional aspects of the pottery. The complementary relationships between the Greek imports and the possible derivation of certain forms from the local allogenic pottery are highlighted. The research also focuses on other sites in western Sicily employing both published and unpublished material. The archaeological findings of Segesta can be contextualised in a network of relationshipswith other nearby centers within which Segesta is considered a political and cultural reference point. In analysing matt-painted pottery this work improves on previous research and contributes new insights into the lives and networks of indigenous inhabitants of Sicily in the late Iron Age and Archaic Era.

This book examines the development of the mosque from the hijra (A.H.1/A.D.622) to the fall of the Umayyad dynasty (A.H.133/A.D.750). The aims of the book are two-fold. Firstly, to consider how those mosques for which we only have literary evidence may be approached for study; and secondly, to trace the development of the mosque in the archaeological record. The archaeological evidence for the mosques at W[asiÇt, Isk[af Ban3 Junayd, K[ufa and the AqÂ[a mosque at Jerusalem are examined in detail; there follows an examination of the form and layout of the various types of mosque encountered in the physical record, and a discussion of some architectural influences which may have affected the development of form. The book also considers thosemosques for which no secure archaeological evidence may be cited and attempts to pick apart previous attempted reconstructions of these buildings which were often based on an uncritical approach to the literary sources.

This book deals with the disappearance of the Aguada Culture in the Catamarca Province Northwestern Argentina, focusing of the abandonment of several settlements in the Ambato Valley, which has shown evidence of fire and a rapid abandonment dated to around 900-1000 AD. A new method of analysing forest fires using microcharcoals was developed to examine the relationship between the abandonment and forest fires. This approach, coming from the field of pedoanthracology, has given us new data on the palaeoenvironment of the area which help us to understand and examine the disappearance of the Aguada society in a new light. We conclude that environmental factors were not the only ones that had an effect on a society under stress. Environmental factors are not a determinant, but are instead part of a social-environmental dimension in which several factors must have worked to push the society into a vulnerable situation. In terms of the abandonment of the Aguada settlements in the Ambato Valley, the study shows that frequent forest fires might have been a factor that played a role. However, based on the regularity of such events, as seen in the sediment history, it is unlikely that these were the only factor causing the abandonment of the valley.

Download now for free or you can read online Solutrean Points of the Iberian Peninsula : Tool making and using behaviour of hunter-gatherers during the Last Glacial Maximum book. Five basic Solutrean point types from the Iberian Peninsula are analysed at local, regional and Pan-Iberian scales in this book. The author reports new results concerning production process and object biography in relation to raw material procurement, technological strategies during production and use-life, site type and regional features. Significant regional differences between Northern and Southern Iberia are demonstrated, which go far beyond typological observations. Evidence indicates that different settlement and mobility patterns are responsible for these regional adaptations of technological innovations. The author successfully links point techno-morphology to human land use. The book is a major resource for the study of Solutrean points, as well as for studies on projectile points in general. In addition, it serves as a guideline for how to approach the study of land use of palaeolithic hunter-gatherers on the base of lithic technology.

Using a diverse body of evidence, from Roman military diplomas to funerary inscriptions and literary sources, the book looks at changes in troop disposition involving the legions, auxiliary units, the vexillations and the naval units based in Moesia Superior and Inferior, and around the northern and western coasts of the Black Sea. The book also examines the emplacement of the region's units, and contextualises both the disposition of troops and their emplacement in terms of regional strategy and the strategy of the empire as a whole. Besides the discussion and analysis, the book also includes detailed maps of the region and useful tables that summarise the results.

The international conference Funerary in Friuli and the neighbouring regions between Iron Age and Late Antiquity (San Vito al Tagliamento (Pordenone, Italy), February 14, 2013) was organized as the final event in Friuli Venezia Giulia of Project PArSJAd - Archaeological Park of the Northern Adriatic, funded by the Cross-Border Cooperation Programme Italy-Slovenia 2007-2013. It was also held to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the excavation (1973) of the first Iron Age urnfield ever found in the Friulian plain, the necropolis of San Vito al Tagliamento. The conference proceedings present a comprehensive overview of this topic in the North Adriatic region, with the review and update of old excavation data and the presentation of unpublished reports resulting from very recent archaeological research. For the Roman age in particular, the conference covered a topic that has registered a significant increase in data in the region over the past two decades but has not yet been debated thoroughly: funerary equipment outside of large urban centres.

The book focuses on the implications of discovering archaeological layers during construction works in modern cities for both urban archaeology and urban planning. The research methodology uses qualitative and quantitative data. Patras, Greece was selected as the case study. Archival research and existing unused data have contributed to the compilation of a database. G.I.S. and statistics are used to process it digitally, and to demonstrate the statistical relationship between data from urban planning and urban archaeology. This enables the prediction of the existence of antiquities and their depth by recording and processing data from five years of excavations, without considering the city's history. The procedure highlights the importance of a city's archaeology for its functioning and proposes the introduction of a new building regulation. This study can be used in the monitoring of construction and the investigation of the role of cultural heritage in the planning of the contemporary city.

Download now for free or you can read online In Dialogue: Tradition and Interaction in the Mesolithic-Neolithic Transition : Tradition and Interaction in the Mesolithic-Neolithic Transition book. This book developed from discussions following the 2012 In Dialogue: Tradition and Interaction in the Mesolithic-Neolithic Transition conference held in Manchester, UK. This conference provided a forum to compare not only the processes through which material innovations were adopted and elaborated during the Early Neolithic, but also the ways in which these processes have been understood and represented within the respective archaeological research traditions. The book examines the developments that followed the introduction of farming into Britain and Southern Scandinavia (Denmark and Southern Sweden). Contributors to the volume discuss the idiosyncratic social and cultural patterns that emerged at this pivotal period. An overarching narrative is woven by scholars from both regions who seamlessly integrate material culture, dwelling practices, controversial theory and ritual activities into a detailed image of the changing world of the early Neolithic in North-West Europe. Through a theoretically informed approach, the relationship between material culture, subsistence regimes, monumentality, ceremonial activity and social relations is explored. The process in which people became 'Neolithic' is complex and required changes not just in subsistence but in every facet of their lives; this is what this book wishes to investigate. By leaving the traditional colonization and adoption debate for a more nuanced approached, an intricate cultural tapestry can be woven. From their organisation of the landscape to their place in the world, things were fundamentally altered: this is where the authors of this book focus their attention. This is a regionally focused, theoretically and methodologically complementary set of papers by specialists who offer a comprehensive and authoritative overview of different aspects of this fundamental transition.

Download now for free or you can read online La valle del Taro nell'eta del Bronzo : Insediamenti ed organizzazione territoriale book. This book focuses on the Bronze Age population of an area that corresponds to the modern administrative Province of Parma, Italy. In the plain near the River Taro, during the second half of the XIX century, Pigorini (the godfather of Italian palethnology) found the first sites of the so-called Terramare Culture. Since his pioneering work, many sites have been discovered and good regional studies have been published. This book starts from this heritage and applies a landscape archaeology approach. Due to the position of the study area, at the western side of the Terramare Culture region, it has focused heavily on exogenous material culture. For a better definition of the dynamics of the population both on the plain and in the mountains, different methodological approaches have been followed: spatial analyses of the plain sites and viewshed analyses of the mountain sites. Another area of focus is the borderland dynamics between the Terramare Culture and the so-called "western facies of the Italian Bronze Age," which runs in the mountains of the study area, and a rather original interpretation of events has been proposed. Finally, a comprehensive framework for the population dynamics in this key area is given.

Studia Calactina I - Research on a Greek-Roman city of Sicily: Kale Akte - Calacte Studia Calactina I - Research on a Greek-Roman city of Sicily: Kale Akte - Calacte PDF By author Francesco Collura last download was at 2017-12-23 00:43:41. This book is good alternative for Holocene Foragers of North India : The Bioarchaeology of Mesolithic Damdama. Download now for free or you can read online Studia Calactina I - Research on a Greek-Roman city of Sicily: Kale Akte - Calacte book. With contributions by Sergio Cascella, Emiliano Arena and Benedetto Carroccio.

Despite being mentioned only infrequently in the ancient literary sources, Kale Akte - Calacte, on the site of modern-day Caronia in the province of Messina, offers several hints that it is just as important as other, better known, ancient centres with regard to material culture, urban planning techniques, artistic and cultural expressions, handicrafts and attestations of diversified human occupation. Born as a probable "emporion" (trading post) of Zancle (Messina) at the time of that city's colonial thrust west to found Himera, Kale Akte links its name primarily to Ducetius, who founded the city in the mid-fifth century BC. Through the prosperous middle and late Hellenistic period, coinciding with the birth of the Roman Province, Calacte became a major trade centre of the Tyrrhenian. The research conducted by the author, integrating and completing those conducted by the few other scholars to have studied the city, aims to increase the knowledge not only of Kale Akte, but also of the events and roles in the history of a typical "minor" Greek-Roman city of Sicily. This monograph is the first of a series dedicated to Kale Akte - Calacte and to the other ancient sites existing in north-central Sicily (Nebrodi Mountains).

This is a publication of my doctoral thesis with the University of Exeter. My research aim has been to assess patterns of settlement continuity and discontinuity between the late Roman and early medieval periods over three regional case study areas: Norfolk, Kent and Somerset. Quantitative and spatial data has been collected and stored within a GIS database and queried to produce a series of spatial relationships. Using landscape archaeology principles the results have been systematically assessed across a range of distinctive character regions, or pays. The discussion of results uses distribution maps, tables and charts to help demonstrate the research outcomes and amplify regional trends in Roman and early medieval settlement relationships, relative to their physical landscape context.

The history of the European aurochs (Bos primigenius) from the Middle Pleistocene to its extinction : A zooarchaeological study The history of the European aurochs (Bos primigenius) from the Middle Pleistocene to its extinction : A zooarchaeological study PDF By author Elizabeth Wright last download was at 2017-11-28 34:37:24. This book is good alternative for Holocene Foragers of North India : The Bioarchaeology of Mesolithic Damdama. Download now for free or you can read online The history of the European aurochs (Bos primigenius) from the Middle Pleistocene to its extinction : A zooarchaeological study book. The aurochs (Bos primigenius) is generally agreed to be the wild ancestor of domestic cattle (Bos taurus) and therefore an in-depth knowledge of this animal is key to research exploring human-cattle interactions, and the origins and spread of cattle domestication. Domestic cattle are smaller than their wild ancestors, but there is also a degree of overlap between the two species, which means that distinguishing them can be problematic. However, previous analyses of aurochs morphology have generally been patchy, and do not provide a picture of aurochs variation across Europe according to environment, climate and geography. As a consequence, zooarchaeologists have had limited resources to assist in identifying remains from their study area. This book provides the widest ranging review of aurochs archaeological material in Europe to date, bringing together bone and tooth biometrical information from a number of European geographical areas and time periods. A number of patterns of body size and shape variation have been identified and discussed.

This book is good alternative for Holocene Foragers of North India : The Bioarchaeology of Mesolithic Damdama. Download now for free or you can read online Conservation of Classical Monuments in the Mediterranean Region : A Study of Anastylosis with Case Studies from Greece and Turkey book. This work studies the conservation of classical monuments in the Mediterranean region. It focuses on a specific method, anastylosis, and its application to classical monuments. The terminology, philosophy, theoretical principles and technical issues of anastylosis are explored within the wider context of cultural heritage management, through case studies from Greece and Turkey, a survey of anastylosis practitioners, and a short visitor survey. Problematic areas in decision-making, planning, implementation, and post-implementation are identified and analysed with reference to current and future practices. Building on this analysis, this work recognises the importance of anastylosis as a tool within the wider field of heritage conservation and management and offers a framework for planning, decision-making, implementation, and post-implementation. The book concludes by asserting the importance of anastylosis as a conservation method for ancient monuments, with significant interpretative potential in the management and presentation of archaeological sites.

Download now for free or you can read online Finding their place in the Swahili World : Finding Their Place in the Swahili World book. Large-scale networks of interaction and exchange have existed on the East African Swahili coast for at least the past two millennia, linking coastal populations with South Asia, the Middle East and the African Interior. The connections coastal inhabitants nurtured along those networks were crucial to the development of Swahili urban society in the early second millennium CE. The archaeological project detailed in this book explores the functioning of Swahili networks by examining their influence in the region around the town of Mikindani in southern Tanzania through a thorough programme of survey and excavations. The Mikindani project is the first of its kind in Tanzania south of Kilwa, and provides an opportunity to investigate Swahili life away from major centres in more modest towns and villages. In so doing, it reveals historical trajectories for coastal communities that rely more heavily on interior than Indian Ocean connections, emphasizing coastal variability, identifying additional paths to socioeconomic success and recognizing that elements thought 'characteristic' of Swahili culture - including participation in trade - were part of social and economic strategies that were adopted, or not, to suit regional circumstances.

This book presents the newly discovered assemblage of 800 Sasanian clay sealings which is now kept in the Persian Gulf Museum of Bandar Abbas, Iran. In 2012, this collection was confiscated in Bandar Khamir, Hormozgan Province when in transit from Iran to UAE, and was delivered to the Hormozgan Center of Cultural Heritage Organization. Unfortunately the provenance of the collection is still unknown, but in comparison with the large Sasanian archives of Qasr- ? Abu Nasr and Taxt- i Soleyman, which comprise 505 and 241 clay sealings, respectively, such a large number of clay sealings is remarkable. The book introduces this new and hitherto unpublished archive of Sasanian clay sealings and we hope that the archive in question will expand our knowledge of Sasanian economic systems.
