This book deals with the disappearance of the Aguada Culture in the Catamarca Province Northwestern Argentina, focusing of the abandonment of several settlements in the Ambato Valley, which has shown evidence of fire and a rapid abandonment dated to around 900-1000 AD. A new method of analysing forest fires using microcharcoals was developed to examine the relationship between the abandonment and forest fires. This approach, coming from the field of pedoanthracology, has given us new data on the palaeoenvironment of the area which help us to understand and examine the disappearance of the Aguada society in a new light. We conclude that environmental factors were not the only ones that had an effect on a society under stress. Environmental factors are not a determinant, but are instead part of a social-environmental dimension in which several factors must have worked to push the society into a vulnerable situation. In terms of the abandonment of the Aguada settlements in the Ambato Valley, the study shows that frequent forest fires might have been a factor that played a role. However, based on the regularity of such events, as seen in the sediment history, it is unlikely that these were the only factor causing the abandonment of the valley.

Five basic Solutrean point types from the Iberian Peninsula are analysed at local, regional and Pan-Iberian scales in this book. The author reports new results concerning production process and object biography in relation to raw material procurement, technological strategies during production and use-life, site type and regional features. Significant regional differences between Northern and Southern Iberia are demonstrated, which go far beyond typological observations. Evidence indicates that different settlement and mobility patterns are responsible for these regional adaptations of technological innovations. The author successfully links point techno-morphology to human land use. The book is a major resource for the study of Solutrean points, as well as for studies on projectile points in general. In addition, it serves as a guideline for how to approach the study of land use of palaeolithic hunter-gatherers on the base of lithic technology.

This book is a military organisational history of the Roman Empire on the lower Danube from the emperor Augustus (r. 27 BC-AD 14) to the emperor Severus Alexander (r. AD 222-235). Using a diverse body of evidence, from Roman military diplomas to funerary inscriptions and literary sources, the book looks at changes in troop disposition involving the legions, auxiliary units, the vexillations and the naval units based in Moesia Superior and Inferior, and around the northern and western coasts of the Black Sea. The book also examines the emplacement of the region's units, and contextualises both the disposition of troops and their emplacement in terms of regional strategy and the strategy of the empire as a whole. Besides the discussion and analysis, the book also includes detailed maps of the region and useful tables that summarise the results.

The international conference Funerary in Friuli and the neighbouring regions between Iron Age and Late Antiquity (San Vito al Tagliamento (Pordenone, Italy), February 14, 2013) was organized as the final event in Friuli Venezia Giulia of Project PArSJAd - Archaeological Park of the Northern Adriatic, funded by the Cross-Border Cooperation Programme Italy-Slovenia 2007-2013. It was also held to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the excavation (1973) of the first Iron Age urnfield ever found in the Friulian plain, the necropolis of San Vito al Tagliamento. The conference proceedings present a comprehensive overview of this topic in the North Adriatic region, with the review and update of old excavation data and the presentation of unpublished reports resulting from very recent archaeological research. For the Roman age in particular, the conference covered a topic that has registered a significant increase in data in the region over the past two decades but has not yet been debated thoroughly: funerary equipment outside of large urban centres.

The book focuses on the implications of discovering archaeological layers during construction works in modern cities for both urban archaeology and urban planning. The research methodology uses qualitative and quantitative data. Patras, Greece was selected as the case study. Archival research and existing unused data have contributed to the compilation of a database. G.I.S. and statistics are used to process it digitally, and to demonstrate the statistical relationship between data from urban planning and urban archaeology. This enables the prediction of the existence of antiquities and their depth by recording and processing data from five years of excavations, without considering the city's history. The procedure highlights the importance of a city's archaeology for its functioning and proposes the introduction of a new building regulation. This study can be used in the monitoring of construction and the investigation of the role of cultural heritage in the planning of the contemporary city.

Download now for free or you can read online In Dialogue: Tradition and Interaction in the Mesolithic-Neolithic Transition : Tradition and Interaction in the Mesolithic-Neolithic Transition book. This book developed from discussions following the 2012 In Dialogue: Tradition and Interaction in the Mesolithic-Neolithic Transition conference held in Manchester, UK. This conference provided a forum to compare not only the processes through which material innovations were adopted and elaborated during the Early Neolithic, but also the ways in which these processes have been understood and represented within the respective archaeological research traditions. The book examines the developments that followed the introduction of farming into Britain and Southern Scandinavia (Denmark and Southern Sweden). Contributors to the volume discuss the idiosyncratic social and cultural patterns that emerged at this pivotal period. An overarching narrative is woven by scholars from both regions who seamlessly integrate material culture, dwelling practices, controversial theory and ritual activities into a detailed image of the changing world of the early Neolithic in North-West Europe. Through a theoretically informed approach, the relationship between material culture, subsistence regimes, monumentality, ceremonial activity and social relations is explored. The process in which people became 'Neolithic' is complex and required changes not just in subsistence but in every facet of their lives; this is what this book wishes to investigate. By leaving the traditional colonization and adoption debate for a more nuanced approached, an intricate cultural tapestry can be woven. From their organisation of the landscape to their place in the world, things were fundamentally altered: this is where the authors of this book focus their attention. This is a regionally focused, theoretically and methodologically complementary set of papers by specialists who offer a comprehensive and authoritative overview of different aspects of this fundamental transition.

This book focuses on the Bronze Age population of an area that corresponds to the modern administrative Province of Parma, Italy. In the plain near the River Taro, during the second half of the XIX century, Pigorini (the godfather of Italian palethnology) found the first sites of the so-called Terramare Culture. Since his pioneering work, many sites have been discovered and good regional studies have been published. This book starts from this heritage and applies a landscape archaeology approach. Due to the position of the study area, at the western side of the Terramare Culture region, it has focused heavily on exogenous material culture. For a better definition of the dynamics of the population both on the plain and in the mountains, different methodological approaches have been followed: spatial analyses of the plain sites and viewshed analyses of the mountain sites. Another area of focus is the borderland dynamics between the Terramare Culture and the so-called "western facies of the Italian Bronze Age," which runs in the mountains of the study area, and a rather original interpretation of events has been proposed. Finally, a comprehensive framework for the population dynamics in this key area is given.

With contributions by Sergio Cascella, Emiliano Arena and Benedetto Carroccio.

Despite being mentioned only infrequently in the ancient literary sources, Kale Akte - Calacte, on the site of modern-day Caronia in the province of Messina, offers several hints that it is just as important as other, better known, ancient centres with regard to material culture, urban planning techniques, artistic and cultural expressions, handicrafts and attestations of diversified human occupation. Born as a probable "emporion" (trading post) of Zancle (Messina) at the time of that city's colonial thrust west to found Himera, Kale Akte links its name primarily to Ducetius, who founded the city in the mid-fifth century BC. Through the prosperous middle and late Hellenistic period, coinciding with the birth of the Roman Province, Calacte became a major trade centre of the Tyrrhenian. The research conducted by the author, integrating and completing those conducted by the few other scholars to have studied the city, aims to increase the knowledge not only of Kale Akte, but also of the events and roles in the history of a typical "minor" Greek-Roman city of Sicily. This monograph is the first of a series dedicated to Kale Akte - Calacte and to the other ancient sites existing in north-central Sicily (Nebrodi Mountains).

This is a publication of my doctoral thesis with the University of Exeter. My research aim has been to assess patterns of settlement continuity and discontinuity between the late Roman and early medieval periods over three regional case study areas: Norfolk, Kent and Somerset. Quantitative and spatial data has been collected and stored within a GIS database and queried to produce a series of spatial relationships. Using landscape archaeology principles the results have been systematically assessed across a range of distinctive character regions, or pays. The discussion of results uses distribution maps, tables and charts to help demonstrate the research outcomes and amplify regional trends in Roman and early medieval settlement relationships, relative to their physical landscape context.

The aurochs (Bos primigenius) is generally agreed to be the wild ancestor of domestic cattle (Bos taurus) and therefore an in-depth knowledge of this animal is key to research exploring human-cattle interactions, and the origins and spread of cattle domestication. Domestic cattle are smaller than their wild ancestors, but there is also a degree of overlap between the two species, which means that distinguishing them can be problematic. However, previous analyses of aurochs morphology have generally been patchy, and do not provide a picture of aurochs variation across Europe according to environment, climate and geography. As a consequence, zooarchaeologists have had limited resources to assist in identifying remains from their study area. This book provides the widest ranging review of aurochs archaeological material in Europe to date, bringing together bone and tooth biometrical information from a number of European geographical areas and time periods. A number of patterns of body size and shape variation have been identified and discussed.

This work studies the conservation of classical monuments in the Mediterranean region. It focuses on a specific method, anastylosis, and its application to classical monuments. The terminology, philosophy, theoretical principles and technical issues of anastylosis are explored within the wider context of cultural heritage management, through case studies from Greece and Turkey, a survey of anastylosis practitioners, and a short visitor survey. Problematic areas in decision-making, planning, implementation, and post-implementation are identified and analysed with reference to current and future practices. Building on this analysis, this work recognises the importance of anastylosis as a tool within the wider field of heritage conservation and management and offers a framework for planning, decision-making, implementation, and post-implementation. The book concludes by asserting the importance of anastylosis as a conservation method for ancient monuments, with significant interpretative potential in the management and presentation of archaeological sites.

Large-scale networks of interaction and exchange have existed on the East African Swahili coast for at least the past two millennia, linking coastal populations with South Asia, the Middle East and the African Interior. The connections coastal inhabitants nurtured along those networks were crucial to the development of Swahili urban society in the early second millennium CE. The archaeological project detailed in this book explores the functioning of Swahili networks by examining their influence in the region around the town of Mikindani in southern Tanzania through a thorough programme of survey and excavations. The Mikindani project is the first of its kind in Tanzania south of Kilwa, and provides an opportunity to investigate Swahili life away from major centres in more modest towns and villages. In so doing, it reveals historical trajectories for coastal communities that rely more heavily on interior than Indian Ocean connections, emphasizing coastal variability, identifying additional paths to socioeconomic success and recognizing that elements thought 'characteristic' of Swahili culture - including participation in trade - were part of social and economic strategies that were adopted, or not, to suit regional circumstances.

Unfortunately the provenance of the collection is still unknown, but in comparison with the large Sasanian archives of Qasr- ? Abu Nasr and Taxt- i Soleyman, which comprise 505 and 241 clay sealings, respectively, such a large number of clay sealings is remarkable. The Egyptian Museum of Florence has one of the most important ushabti collections in Italy and Europe. The collection contains around eight hundred ushabtis, which originally belonged to different collections: Granducale, Nizzoli, Rosellini, Ricci, Schiaparelli. Other smaller groups contain objects belonging to different sources collected within the 19th and 20th centuries. The ushabti corpus of Florence belongs to the end of the Second Intermediate and Roman Period. In 2008, the "Ushabti Project" was started by the Egyptology and the Coptic Civilization Study Centre "J.F. Champollion" of Genoa, in cooperation with the Egyptian Museum of Florence, which were interested in a complete study and scientific publication of a new catalogue concerning the ushabti collection. The catalogue is divided into several volumes, providing a complete documentation of the Florence ushabti collection. This volume contains a general introduction about the history of the collection, the abbreviations and textual codes, the records, a photographic section, a useful index and a bibliography.

This book investigates the production technology and inter-site circulation of a large and diverse Late Neolithic ceramic assemblage from the flat-extended settlement of Makrygialos (Phase II), in northern Greece. Comparative samples from Dimini, in Thessaly, and Agrosykia A and Giannitsa B, in western Macedonia, are also incorporated. It draws conclusions from the use of macroscopic and petrographic analysis of a large number of samples in an integrated project. The new evidence offers a better understanding of the role of technological choice in ceramic production. Locally produced and imported ceramic categories are found to co-exist. They signify manufacture by different groups or individuals with varying degrees of technological knowledge and skill, probably producing in different places, and within distinct ceramic traditions. More importantly, petrographic analysis provides positive evidence of the long-distance exchange of pots, challenging previously established ideas on the circulation of pottery for this period and geographical area. The emerging picture strongly supports the idea of a dynamic Neolithic society characterised by mobilities, interaction and social competition between people, as revealed through their material culture.

This work follows the rapid survey of the ecclesiastical geology of the stonework of known Anglo-Saxon churches throughout England undertaken by the author a decade ago. From that brief study it proved possible to both understand and distinguish clearly obvious patterns in the use of the stonework. Furthermore, the use and value of specific rock types were determined and diagnostic features which could be used to identify buildings of the period were described. Subsequent, more widespread published studies in Scotland, Ireland and Wales, expanded the English studies by revealing closely analogous examples of the same indicative features. Beyond the domain of the Anglo-Saxons but, of the same pre-Romanesque age, a widespread building fashion had been followed and to this the name 'Patterned' was applied. Chapters 1 and 2 introduce and summarize this work and give brief details of the specific features that are diagnostic of this period. Although a number of relatively minor regional studies have been undertaken by the author in England, nothing had until this time been attempted for the North of England. The present work takes the same form as those studies for both Ireland and Wales. It provides a comprehensive analysis to cover all the early churches over an area of eleven North of England counties. Too large to be bound within one volume, the churches in these counties have been described in two volume parts, this being Part A. In this, the (pre-1974) counties involved are, in alphabetical order, Cheshire, Cumberland, Derbyshire, Durham, Lancashire and Lincolnshire; 79 churches or sites in all. This widespread regional study further endorses the existence of those distinctive Patterned features in stonework fashions seen elsewhere. That building fashions changed in the past, if less dramatically, much as they do today, was further emphasised with stonework of Norman and later periods showing the same significant style changes as re-described here and noted in previous studies. This study, by county, drew attention to the dramatic differences that exist in the numbers of early churches that remain in existence today by geographical region. Consequential to this far-reaching study a variety of supplementary aspects of church construction are also discussed.

This volume is the result of a research project that, since 2008, has had the objective of studying and understanding the spatial planning and dynamics of rural settlements located in the catchment of the River Cavadonna (south-eastern Sicily) between Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The new archaeological and topographical data that has emerged from recent surveys, along with a preliminary review of documentary sources and place names, together with a preliminary census of all archaeological evidence known through the scientific literature and local erudition, may contribute to a better analysis of the historical context and topographical relationships of the ancient and medieval settlements in Syracuse's inland, and to their connection with the viability, and the peculiar geographical and strategic positions, of the ancient Greek metropolis of Syracuse and its sub-colony of Akrai. This book includes prefaces by Professor Giovanni Uggeri, Professor Emeritus of Ancient Topography at the University of Roma "La Sapienza," and Professor Dario Palermo, Full Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Catania.

Download now for free or you can read online Transcaucasian Bronze Belts book. The present work catalogues and analyses the so-called 'bronze belts' - thin metal plaques, decorated or not - that represent one of the main features of the material culture of the native peoples of the Caucasus area during the Iron Age. Given the amount of material examined, the research has been divided into two parts. The first part is devoted to the study of the belts themselves, their art and style. The second part offers a summary of the archaeological contexts of their recovery. Each site is described by its overall features, followed by a more detailed analysis of the context of provenance of each indivdual belt, represented in most cases by funerary evidence. For each of these burials the set of objects associated with the deceased is laid out in full detail. From the preface by John Curtis'In this pioneering study Manuel Castelluccia has collected together about 350 sheet bronze belts that were found mostly in graves in the South Caucasus region or Transcaucasia (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and South Ossetia)...This work is particularly valuable in that nearly all the belts are now in museums in the former Soviet Union or are known only through publications in Russian, Georgian and Armenian, so for the first time this large body of material is made available to western scholars...This exemplary catalogue will be compulsory reading and a standard work of reference for all scholars interested in the archaeology of Transcaucasia.'

Khok Charoen (Hill of Prosperity) is a neolithic burial ground in Central Thailand, excavated in the 1960s and 70s by the Thai-British Archaeological Expedition, but because of the substantial Australian contribution these excavations can rightly be called the first Australian venture into Southeast Asian archaeology. The site, dated to the latter half of the second and the beginning of the first millennium BC, consists of three cemeteries with a total of 65 burials, straddling a discontinuity caused by floods, which greatly disturbed these burials and their finds, which include 513 pots, but no bronze. The study of this pottery is the key to the understanding of the cultural and social history of the site, explaining killings and grave robberies within a divided society. The aim of this book is to present, with the help of a great number of illustrations, an overall picture of this site at the junction of Stone and Bronze.

Grumentum, in the inland of Basilicata, was a Lucanian city and then a Roman colony. This volume publishes the papers presented at two conferences, held in 2012 and 2015. Their aim was to discuss the results of the recent archaeological research in Grumentum and other sites in Lucania. The results are many, and include a new numismatic document concerning the Lucanian city and the reconstruction of the central area of the Roman town from the Late Republican phases to the Augustean project of the new Forum. The most important monuments are studied and their features and transformations are presented according to a chronological frame provided by the finds and their date. Typological studies and chemical and physical analyses have yielded new data which improves our knowledge of the economy, trade, diet and culture of Grumentum. Finally, the transformation of this city into a Christian community is highlighted by new discoveries and findings.

Download now for free or you can read online The Copper Age in South-West Spain : A bioarchaeological approach to prehistoric social organisation book. The prehistoric communities in Iberia have never been investigated before using a cutting-edge and multidisciplinary approach. In this research, the latest techniques are applied in order to allow a reconstruction of prehistoric social structure and social organization. Specifically, this investigation uses bioarchaeological methods, such as osteological, paleopathological and biochemical approaches (stable isotopes), in combination with funerary context to reconstruct the mortality, morbidity, dietary and mobility patterns of two human skeletal populations from the Copper Age (c. 3300-2100 cal BC). The main objective was to test whether social differences were already present during the 3rd millennium BC in southern Iberia. For this purpose, two main Copper Age sites, Valencina de la ConcepciÓn (Seville) and La Pijotilla (Badajoz), were analysed and then compared to many other contemporary sites from the same geographical location. In sum, the results of this research demonstrate the complexity of the funerary patterns in the Iberian Copper Age, providing evidence for social inequality and differentiation.

BC, analisis tecno-tipologico de las industrias liticas y ceramicas, y organizacion funcional del poblamiento book. The rich Pleistocene and Holocene archaeological and palaeontological records in the Sierra de Atapuerca caves (Burgos, Spain) have aroused major interest in the evolution of the area's prehistoric settlement. Of particular relevance to this work are the karst contexts containing archaeo-stratigraphic levels dating from the VI to the II millennium cal. BC, the megalithic structures and the open air sites. From 1999 to 2014 a research project covering a 314 km2 area (10 km radius around Mayor Cave) was developed. The fieldwork was based on ten archaeological surveys with a full-coverage intensive systematic method. This book is the first published monograph of all Holocene sites recorded to date in the vicinity of Sierra de Atapuerca: caves, megalithic structures and open air sites (surveyed sites and excavated sites) from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age. It also presents the radiocarbon dates, the results of the systematic survey project (some 200 prehistoric sites), the techno-typological analysis of all the material remains (lithic and ceramic tools), the site periodization, the technological evolution by periods, the functional organization of the population process, the economic exploitation with a subsistence agriculture andlivestock strategy, the spatial distribution by periods, the GIS geospatial database and a thorough, up-to-date cartography of every Holocene archaeological site in this area. These findings show that the area around Sierra de Atapuerca may be one of the best potential sources for deeper knowledge of Late Prehistory on the Northern Iberian Plateau.

This book studies the imported and local pottery from 238 BC to 700 AD that was recovered during a survey of the territory of Nora (Cagliari - South Sardinia) in diachronic and synchronic terms. The pottery provides a stimulus for the reconstruction of the development of the territory of Nora, underlining the presence of farms, villas, necropolises and quarries, which were located in the land behind Nora. The huge quantity of pottery, coming from the whole Mediterranean area, covers a rich and varied spectrum, which reveals the different attitudes of each historical period, from the first arrival of the Romans in Sardinia till Late Antiquity, just before the Arab occupation of the island.
