This volume is the result of a research project that, since 2008, has had the objective of studying and understanding the spatial planning and dynamics of rural settlements located in the catchment of the River Cavadonna (south-eastern Sicily) between Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The new archaeological and topographical data that has emerged from recent surveys, along with a preliminary review of documentary sources and place names, together with a preliminary census of all archaeological evidence known through the scientific literature and local erudition, may contribute to a better analysis of the historical context and topographical relationships of the ancient and medieval settlements in Syracuse's inland, and to their connection with the viability, and the peculiar geographical and strategic positions, of the ancient Greek metropolis of Syracuse and its sub-colony of Akrai. This book includes prefaces by Professor Giovanni Uggeri, Professor Emeritus of Ancient Topography at the University of Roma "La Sapienza," and Professor Dario Palermo, Full Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Catania.

The present work catalogues and analyses the so-called 'bronze belts' - thin metal plaques, decorated or not - that represent one of the main features of the material culture of the native peoples of the Caucasus area during the Iron Age. Given the amount of material examined, the research has been divided into two parts. The first part is devoted to the study of the belts themselves, their art and style. The second part offers a summary of the archaeological contexts of their recovery. Each site is described by its overall features, followed by a more detailed analysis of the context of provenance of each indivdual belt, represented in most cases by funerary evidence. For each of these burials the set of objects associated with the deceased is laid out in full detail. From the preface by John Curtis'In this pioneering study Manuel Castelluccia has collected together about 350 sheet bronze belts that were found mostly in graves in the South Caucasus region or Transcaucasia (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and South Ossetia)...This work is particularly valuable in that nearly all the belts are now in museums in the former Soviet Union or are known only through publications in Russian, Georgian and Armenian, so for the first time this large body of material is made available to western scholars...This exemplary catalogue will be compulsory reading and a standard work of reference for all scholars interested in the archaeology of Transcaucasia.'

Khok Charoen (Hill of Prosperity) is a neolithic burial ground in Central Thailand, excavated in the 1960s and 70s by the Thai-British Archaeological Expedition, but because of the substantial Australian contribution these excavations can rightly be called the first Australian venture into Southeast Asian archaeology. The site, dated to the latter half of the second and the beginning of the first millennium BC, consists of three cemeteries with a total of 65 burials, straddling a discontinuity caused by floods, which greatly disturbed these burials and their finds, which include 513 pots, but no bronze. The study of this pottery is the key to the understanding of the cultural and social history of the site, explaining killings and grave robberies within a divided society. The aim of this book is to present, with the help of a great number of illustrations, an overall picture of this site at the junction of Stone and Bronze.

Grumentum, in the inland of Basilicata, was a Lucanian city and then a Roman colony. This volume publishes the papers presented at two conferences, held in 2012 and 2015. Their aim was to discuss the results of the recent archaeological research in Grumentum and other sites in Lucania. The results are many, and include a new numismatic document concerning the Lucanian city and the reconstruction of the central area of the Roman town from the Late Republican phases to the Augustean project of the new Forum. The most important monuments are studied and their features and transformations are presented according to a chronological frame provided by the finds and their date. Typological studies and chemical and physical analyses have yielded new data which improves our knowledge of the economy, trade, diet and culture of Grumentum. Finally, the transformation of this city into a Christian community is highlighted by new discoveries and findings.

The prehistoric communities in Iberia have never been investigated before using a cutting-edge and multidisciplinary approach. In this research, the latest techniques are applied in order to allow a reconstruction of prehistoric social structure and social organization. Specifically, this investigation uses bioarchaeological methods, such as osteological, paleopathological and biochemical approaches (stable isotopes), in combination with funerary context to reconstruct the mortality, morbidity, dietary and mobility patterns of two human skeletal populations from the Copper Age (c. 3300-2100 cal BC). The main objective was to test whether social differences were already present during the 3rd millennium BC in southern Iberia. For this purpose, two main Copper Age sites, Valencina de la ConcepciÓn (Seville) and La Pijotilla (Badajoz), were analysed and then compared to many other contemporary sites from the same geographical location. In sum, the results of this research demonstrate the complexity of the funerary patterns in the Iberian Copper Age, providing evidence for social inequality and differentiation.

The rich Pleistocene and Holocene archaeological and palaeontological records in the Sierra de Atapuerca caves (Burgos, Spain) have aroused major interest in the evolution of the area's prehistoric settlement. Of particular relevance to this work are the karst contexts containing archaeo-stratigraphic levels dating from the VI to the II millennium cal. BC, the megalithic structures and the open air sites. From 1999 to 2014 a research project covering a 314 km2 area (10 km radius around Mayor Cave) was developed. The fieldwork was based on ten archaeological surveys with a full-coverage intensive systematic method. This book is the first published monograph of all Holocene sites recorded to date in the vicinity of Sierra de Atapuerca: caves, megalithic structures and open air sites (surveyed sites and excavated sites) from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age. It also presents the radiocarbon dates, the results of the systematic survey project (some 200 prehistoric sites), the techno-typological analysis of all the material remains (lithic and ceramic tools), the site periodization, the technological evolution by periods, the functional organization of the population process, the economic exploitation with a subsistence agriculture andlivestock strategy, the spatial distribution by periods, the GIS geospatial database and a thorough, up-to-date cartography of every Holocene archaeological site in this area. These findings show that the area around Sierra de Atapuerca may be one of the best potential sources for deeper knowledge of Late Prehistory on the Northern Iberian Plateau.

This book studies the imported and local pottery from 238 BC to 700 AD that was recovered during a survey of the territory of Nora (Cagliari - South Sardinia) in diachronic and synchronic terms. The pottery provides a stimulus for the reconstruction of the development of the territory of Nora, underlining the presence of farms, villas, necropolises and quarries, which were located in the land behind Nora. The huge quantity of pottery, coming from the whole Mediterranean area, covers a rich and varied spectrum, which reveals the different attitudes of each historical period, from the first arrival of the Romans in Sardinia till Late Antiquity, just before the Arab occupation of the island.

This fifth volume in a series of publications dealing with the excavations by Groningen University in 19912004 on the Timpone della Motta, Francavilla Marittima, Calabria (Italy), under the direction of the author, is preceded by four BAR volumes on the Oenotrian production of Matt-painted pottery. That pottery, together with impasto pottery fragments, loom weights and spindle whorls, was associated with an indigenous Oenotrian apsidal building, which, judging from the presence of animal bones (a relatively high percentage of which were fetal and neonatal bones of pigs, sheep and goats), an altar and ash, was not only a residence of female spinners and weavers, but also fulfilled a sacred function. The present volume largely consists of a catalogue of 300 spindle whorls of various types. Their weights and types are compared with spindle whorls from other Calabrian find spots (mainly graves) and conclusions as to the development in indigenous Oenotrian spinning practices are suggested.

This is the sixth volume in a series of publications dealing with the excavations by Groningen University in 1991-2004 on the Timpone della Motta, Francavilla Marittima, Calabria (Italy), under the direction of the author. It is preceded by four BAR volumes on the Oenotrian production of Matt-painted pottery and one on spindle whorls. The locally produced material, together with impasto pottery, loom weights, cooking stove fragments, etc. was associated with an indigenous, Oenotrian apsidal building dating from the 8th century BC. Judging from the presence of an altar and a huge ash layer - alongside the many bone fragments of adult and sub-adult domestic animals, as well as those of foetal and neonatal specimens - this was not only the residence of female spinners and weavers, but also fulfilled a sacred function. The present volume largely consists of a catalogue of loom weights of various types, among them nicely decorated ones, and a description of their find circumstances. The book also contains a description of the loom weights and spindle whorls and their provenances from the excavations of Zancani Montuoro/Stoop 1963-'69 and a chapter on the extraordinary solar iconography of the large 8th-c. BC loom weights from Francavilla Marittima.

This monograph develops a zooarchaeological and taphonomic study of four archaeological sites (Lezetxiki, Astigarragako Kobea, Labeko Koba and Ekain) and two paleontological caves (Muniziaga and Illobi) located in the eastern sector of the Cantabrian Corniche (Basque Country and Navarre). These sites are characterized by alternating occupations by bears (Ursus spelaeus and Ursus arctos), carnivores and human beings during the Upper Pleistocene and early Holocene. The study also demonstrates the existence of intense competition for the occupation of the caves until the early Upper Paleolithic period, when modern humans displaced the bears and carnivores.

Download now for free or you can read online The Technology of Large-Scale Zinc Production in Chongqing in Ming and Qing China book. This book presents the analyses, technical interpretation and socio-economic contextualisation of the production remains of zinc distillation from three Ming sites in Fengdu and one Qing site in Shizhu, Chongqing, southwest China. Zinc ore, zinc metal, retorts and slag from these sites were analysed by OM, SEM-EDS, EPMA-WDS and XRD. Following on from a detailed technological reconstruction, some differences were found between the zinc distillation technologies in Fengdu and Shizhu, not only in technical efficiency but also in the organisation of production, which can be explained as adaptation of the zinc production for coinage to the different social, political and economic constraints affecting each group of sites. This book then contextualises and discusses the significance of Chinese zinc production with reference to coinage in Ming and Qing China, but also by comparing it to other brass- and zinc-making technologies in China, India and Europe, and by assessing the influence of Chinese zinc in the international maritime trade.

This work includes the study of use traces of lithic technologies manufactured by different hunter-gatherer societies from the Central Plateau of Santa Cruz (Argentina). The time period studied is from the Pleistocene-Holocene transition to the Late Holocene (ca. 13,000 years AP C14 to historical times). Techno-morphological studies, microwear analysis and experimental archaeology were applied to lithic materials of the Cueva Maripe and Piedra Museo sites. Similarities in the design and use of lithics during the different periods of occupation of the study sites were identified. This allowed us to determine the economic and symbolic aspects of the technological practices, and to formulate assumptions about the importance of the context of use of lithic technologies in the social organization of the groups that inhabited at the Central Plateau of Santa Cruz (Patagonia, Argentina).

This book presents a detailed study of the West Mound ÇatalhÖyÜk chipped stone, flint and obsidian, using a pluridisciplinary and multi-scale approach. The pluridisciplinary approach is developed using macroscopic observations and analytic tools of mineralogy (infrared spectroscopy); geology and geomorphology (the local resources available and geodynamic patterns); and a typo-technological study (the nature of productions and the modalities of procurement). The global lithic study permits one to address the economic and technological changes in the chipped stone production and exchange system during the Early Chalcolithic period (ECAIV). This study contributes to the discussion of the nature of the technological changes through time at ÇatalhÖyÜk from the Neolithic to the Early Chalcolithic period, and the nature of lithic productions, from local and domestic productions of flint to specialized production of flint and obsidian from a regional perspective. It also permits discussion of the socio-economical changes observed during this transitional period.

Download now for free or you can read online The Terracotta Figurines from Tell Timai: 2009-2013 : 2009-2013 book. This study documents the corpus of terracotta figurines that were found during excavations at Tell Timai between 2009 and 2013. The study assesses the locations in which terracotta figurines have been found both at Tell Timai and across Egypt, and discusses their usage within the settlements of Pharaonic and Ptolemaic-Roman Egypt. In addition, a chronological discussion of terracotta usage in Egypt from the Pharaonic to the Ptolemaic-Roman Period is presented to place the Tell Timai terracottas in chronological order to highlight themes of continuity and change. The figurine catalogue provides a detailed examination of the types and forms represented at Tell Timai and highlights the manufacturing techniques and decoration schemes used for specific types. This analysis also provides a clearer idea of the type of domestic religious activities that were practised at Tell Timai by the local population and the choice of terracotta styles used at specific periods. The study also provides date ranges based on associated ceramic assemblages to provide clearer dating for Egyptian terracotta types in Egypt.

Maritime archaeological archives within the UK often face an uncertain fate. Some are deposited in public repositories, while others are dispersed, are deteriorating, remain uninterpreted and uncurated, are sold or sometimes abandoned. The net result puts elements of the nationally important cultural heritage resource, which tells the story of human interaction with the sea, out of reach for researchers, educators and the public as a whole. Research to understand the nature and scale of the problems faced by maritime archaeological archives is presented within this volume. Subjects covered include a review of coastal museums and their approach to maritime archaeological archives and presentation of the results of an extensive survey which sought to discover where archives are held, their composition and issues of access ownership and storage. Further in-depth consideration of the maritime archaeological archive backlog within England has identified where incomplete or low levels of analysis and publication are hampering access to past investigations and impacting on the development of the discipline. Maritime archaeological archives provide challenges for museums, archaeological, heritage management and special interest groups involved in their creation and management. The various regulatory regimes and development frameworks impacting their production, curation and deposition are examined and situations where work on sites falls outside of any management processes identified. Issues related to roles and responsibilities for the overseeing of archive flow from seabed to repository are scrutinised along with a range of systemic and practical issues which need to be addressed to ensure a more positive future for these significant archives.

This monograph summarizes the first anthropological survey of human skeletons excavated at the 2nd church cemetery in Pohansko-Břeclav (Czech Republic). The cemetery was discovered in 2006 in a north-eastern suburb of Pohansko and represents one of the key pieces of evidence about changes in human society at the end of the Great Moravian Empire (9th-10th century), when Early Medieval societies transformed into a new political organization. The monograph provides a summary of the preservation, paleodemographic assessments and paleopathology of the adult and non-adult skeletons with respect to new developments in techniques for assessing age at death, sex, stature and body mass from the Early Medieval skeletal material. Also provided are detailed preservation and osteometric data for further application in bioarchaeology, skeletal anthropology and archaeology.

Much has been written in recent years about Identities, understood as social, nested or constructing identities; or 'Ethnic Identity', presented as a strategy of distinction and/or identification, as a multidimensional or endogenous ethnicity, or also interpreted as a social construction, social network, negotiated or group identity; and concerning the 'Archaeology of the Identity', including the explicit relation between mortuary practices and Social Identities in a 'multi-ethnic' perspective or as a 'constructed strategy of shifting identities'. This book is not 'another brick in the wall', but a contribution to 'break the wall' between different disciplines in an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary framework. We present in this volume fifteen papers focused on theoretical and interpretative proposals from the textual, archaeological and bioarchaeological record, as well as a series of 'case studies' on certain European areas essentially throughout the analysis of the funeral world in the Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages.

Download now for free or you can read online Water Management Technology as a Contributing Factor in the Development of the Rural Landscape of the Maltese Archipelago : Irrigating a semi-arid landscape book. This book synthesises archaeological and historical research in order to investigate Maltese water management technology in the Medieval, Early Modern and Modern periods, more specifically between AD 900 and AD 1900. Maltese terrestrial geological formations and stratification are a determining factor in conditioning the formation of subterranean aquifers, water-harvesting and storage, landscape development and utilisation. Central to this publication are reservoirs, cisterns, wells and perched aquifer galleries, which have for centuries provided farmers tilling arable land with a supplementary water source other than the limited and erratic seasonal rainfall. The data and conclusions presented in this book are the result of extensive personal field and archival research and include an assessment of the available documentary sources of evidence, including place names and cartographic sources. Comparative research suggests that a number of perched aquifer subterranean galleries share common characteristics with the qanat technology of the Islamic and Roman worlds and, in a Maltese context, were possibly part of a new agricultural and technological package introduced during the Muslim or post-Muslim period between the eleventh and the fourteenth centuries AD.
